When fat resides in the neck, it can often give an individual a “double chin” appearance. Liposuction is used in this area to help achieve a sleeker, more defined neck. Baltimore plastic surgeon, Dr. Janet Woodyard, uses various liposuction methods depending on the nature of where the fat resides and how delicate the area is. Liposuction has the ability to garner excellent improvements to the appearance of the neck and profile. During the consultation, Dr. Woodyard will assess the lower face and neck area to determine if neck liposuction can attain the results the patient desires. Individuals with loose and sagging skin, may need a neck lift. In addition, patients born with limited bone support may want to consider a chin implant or genioplasty.
"I had a breast reduction from Dr. Woodyard over 23 years ago and I must say I am still SO VERY HAPPY. I have watched some of these plastic surgery shows and recently I saw a show dedicated to women that had had complication from a reduction (the horror). I never thought one could have problems with a reduction but wow can you....I had the best results and experience with Dr. Woodyard and never had any complications and to this day my GIRLS are just as perking and looking great as ever. I remember how professional, caring and informative she was. I trusted her completed and I'm so glad she was worth the trust, as I was young and did not ask many questions. I am grateful now and was grateful then..."- A.A. / Google / Mar 21, 2019
"Dr. Woodyard, I sincerely would like to thank you such a kind and patient person and doctor that you are. You make sure that things are understood by the patient and explained thoroughly. Thank you for not being one of many "Stuffy" doctors that we have in healthcare. I would also like to inform you of the professional, very patient and friendly staff. I call the office five times in one day and the hospitality is always the same. They are the poster children of "Customer friendly". I really appreciate you and excited to have experienced you are my doctor."- L / Office Visit / Nov 14, 2017

During liposuction, a small incision will be made just below the chin and excess fat will be removed from the neck through a cannula. Most surgeons prefer to use the tumescent (“superwet”) liposuction technique. During this approach, a liquid made up of saline, a numbing agent and a substance that controls bleeding will be injected. This procedure may be a stand-alone procedure but, in most cases, it used in unison with the neck lift.
Once the fat has been removed from the neck, incisions are made under the chin and near the ears to allow the surgeon access to the neck muscles. At this time, the muscles will be pulled tight and the overlying skin will be stretched and re-draped over the neck so the desired definition and contour is attained. A drain may be placed under the skin to help collect fluid and blood, but this drain is usually removed within 24-48 hours. If a combination procedure is taking place, such as a facelift, the neck lift will most likely occur after the facelift has been completed.
All neck liposuction procedures are performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Following surgery, patients will wear a compression garment to control swelling. Patients who have a combined surgery of neck liposuction plus a lift will have a longer recovery period. During the first follow-up visit, when all bandages are removed, patients will be able to see the results immediately.
The cost for neck liposuction will vary. On average, patients can expect to pay between $2,000-$4,500 with additional cost if any accompanying surgeries took place.

Neck Liposuction FAQs
Will I Have a Scar?
Scarring with liposuction is very minimal. The incisions will range from keyhole punch marks to very small lines and usually are not an issue with this procedure.
What About Small Amounts?
Liposuction removes both small and large amounts of fat. Patients that have a small, yet distinct bulge residing just under the chin will benefit greatly from this procedure. The removal of this fatty bulge should be fairly straightforward.
Does the Fat Come Back?
The fat cells removed during liposuction do not come back. However, patients that gain weight after surgery are at risk of regaining fat because the remaining cells left behind can expand and become larger. Patients that adhere to a healthy diet and exercise program will continue to see results years after their surgery.
